Tactical Empathy

Read the room, mirror it, and make people feel understood before you ask for anything.

Part of: Sales & Marketing, Sales, Negotiation, Communication & Storytelling

Tactical empathy is the skill of understanding the other side's emotions well enough to steer the conversation without them feeling pushed. It's the core of FBI-style negotiation and the quiet engine behind every likeable closer. These lessons show it in action and point you to the book that turned it into a repeatable method.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is tactical empathy?
Tactical empathy is deliberately recognizing and naming the other person's feelings and perspective so they feel understood, which lowers their guard and opens real negotiation. It comes from FBI negotiator Chris Voss.
What's the difference between mirroring and labeling?
Mirroring is repeating the last few words someone said to keep them talking. Labeling is naming the emotion you sense out loud ("it sounds like you're worried about cost"). Mirroring opens the door; labeling makes people feel seen.
